James L. Knoll, IV, M.D. is the Director of Forensic Psychiatry and Associate Professor of Psychiatry at SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, NY.  Dr. Knoll is board certified in both adult and forensic psychiatry.  He has worked as a forensic evaluator for state and federal courts, corrections, and the private sector.  He has served as a consulting forensic expert for the DEA, FBI, NASA, DOJ, ACLU, and law enforcement.


Dr. Knoll served as the Medical Director of Psychiatric Services for the New Hampshire State Prison system for six years, and has been the training director of the SUNY Upstate forensic psychiatry fellowship training program for eight years.  He is Editor-in-Chief of the Psychiatric Times (www.psychiatrictimes.com), one of the most widely read publications in the field of psychiatry.


Dr. Knoll has over 100 publications in journals and book chapters.  His main areas of research interest include suicide, violence prevention, and mindfulness training.
